Tip 3: Coring properly

Coring 101: fix the machine tight and let it drill, don’t force it

Coring

A coring machine cuts best when it’s rock-solid on the surface and moving slowly β€” force and speed are your enemies.

Body:

Diamond coring looks straightforward: attach the bit, press the trigger, push down. But the two things that separate a clean hole from a broken bit (or a broken machine) are rigid fixing and slow, controlled feed.

Fix the machine properly. Before you drill a single millimeter:

  • Anchor the base to the wall or floor with the correct fixings for the surface β€” vacuum plate for smooth surfaces, expansion anchor bolts for concrete, ceiling brace for overhead work.
  • Test the rig: grab it and try to wiggle it. If there’s any play, tighten or re-anchor. Movement during drilling is what cracks bits, chips diamond segments, and ruins the hole geometry.
  • Make sure the column is perpendicular to the surface β€” a leaning column means the bit binds in the hole halfway through.

Then drill slowly and steadily. Coring is not drilling wood. Common mistakes:

  • Don’t force the feed. Let the diamond segments do the cutting. If the machine is struggling, you’re pushing too hard β€” ease off.
  • Keep water flowing on wet coring bits at all times. No water means the diamonds glaze over and the bit stops cutting.
  • Listen to the motor. A steady tone means it’s cutting happily. A dropping tone means you’re overloading it β€” reduce feed pressure.
  • Reverse and re-clear if you feel the bit binding. Back the bit out a centimeter, let the debris flush, then continue.

A 100mm hole through reinforced concrete should take a couple of minutes at proper feed β€” not seconds. Slow and fixed always beats fast and loose. Rushing costs bits, motors, and sometimes fingers.
